Do Nothing Snake Sideways album cover redesign
Snake Sideways
The band Do Nothing are a Nottingham post punk band with dancy rhythms, infectious hooks, and absurdist lyrics. The existing graphics for Do Nothing are very dark and brooding; they follow general trends in UK post punk and don't feel as unique as the band.
For this album cover redesign, I used bright, saturated colors and surrealist imagery that's half watercolor painting and half collage to evoke a feeling of world-weary disenchantment on a beautiful summer day. The visuals direction stays true to the band's vibe, but allows the album to stand out to listeners when they're digging through the stacks.

The moodboard I assembled for this project
Typography
Helvetica Neue is, for better or worse, ubiquitous in so many areas of modern marketing. For some reason, the usually mass market-skeptical post-punk scene is no different. I think it's an ironic thing. I actually like Helvetica Neue in the same way that I like empty sketchbooks. It can really be anything you want it to be.
Colors
The existing graphics for Do Nothing are very dark and brooding. But to me, this band has a dancey exuberance that I wanted to see reflected in the album art. I wanted their album to pop out on the shelves of the record store, so I chose bright, saturated colors — the kind you would see on a sunny summer day. This in combination with the absurdist imagery I used in the illustrations evokes the mood of the band, to me at least.
